According to the inspector from the state Home Builders Licensure Board, they were supposed to get a building permit. They did not get a permit.
Our project was an extension onto an existing deck. Our request was that the materials of the new section match the existing materials of the existing deck. The existing deck was constructed with Premium Grade deck boards (pictured). The contract (not yet posted but will be) with Alabama Decks and Exteriors (ADE) included Premium Grade deck boards as we requested. However, after the project was complete, we noticed that the deck boards installed were not Premium Grade. We checked the prices of Premium Grade deck boards and the installed deck boards, and discovered that the Premium Grade deck boards cost 50% more than the installed boards. They cut corners, to their financial benefit, by not installing the materials called for in our contract. We contacted ADE and Brady, the owner, tried to convince us that there was no difference, even after we told him that we knew that there was a significant difference in price and a significant difference in quality because our existing 20 year old deck was made with Premium Grade boards. Brady’s refusal to remedy resulted in us seeking an attorney who agreed that ADE breached the contract. This process is still ongoing and we’ll be posting all documentation, including emails from ADE’s owner, Brady, and correspondence from our Attorney.
My advice, make sure everything is in the contract, as we did, and additionally, require use of your municipal building inspection Department . More to follow, in the meantime, beware.
