Aqueria La Oaxaqueña has been serving the most authentic Mexican Food in Atlanta for over 20 years. Rosalía Ruíz, the head chef and owner, had been selling traditional food and snacks in her state of origin in Oaxaca, Mexico. In 1995 she moved to Dekalb County in Georgia with her husband Oscar Arteaga.
They began to make and sell tamales to other Mexican immigrants in the area, and soon saved enough money for a small food truck. After a few years and hardships, they were able to open their first restaurant in Clayton County. For five years they earned the loyalty of their clients and soon outgrew the small place.
By 2006 they moved to their current location on 605 Mt Zion Rd in Clayton County, where they still run their business. La Oaxaqueña has received awards and rave reviews from the Atlanta Journal Constitution and The Zagat. It was included in Atlanta Magazine’s top 50 restaurants (2015) and was also voted Creative Loafing’s Best Mexican Restaurant in 2008 and 2009.
